Essential Questions

Community: Are there certain obligations for humanity to treat members of a community and the natural enviornment in a certain way? Are there constraints? If so, are the obligations and constraints based only on a concern for the indirect effects on humanity?

Justice: What are the justifications for, and implications of, claiming that there are universal standards for morality? When moral codes of individuals conflict, can criteria be developed for an international morality that transcends them?

Forgiveness: To what extent does the state of a person's knowledge play in deciding whether an act is right or wrong? Under what conditions would it be legitimate for a person to plead ignorance?

Justifications

Plato believed that there are 4 ways to Justify:

A) Empiricism
B) Reason (Both Inductive and Deductive)
C) Authority
D) Memory

Questions:

1. After learning about how the Bosnian War began and the role of Karadzic and Milosovic, was it fair for the Independent to use the word "Monster".

2. How do you think this phrase would be justified, according to Plato? Use specific examples from the reading and the documentary, The Death of Yugoslavia, to justify your claims.

3. When the term Monster is used, what do you think it means. (You can look it up in the dictionary, but as you know, that has limitations).

It will be important to skim both articles again, in light of what you now know.

4. Has your answer changed since your first entry? Why or why not?
